You’d need to look at the ‘in year’ admissions policies for the schools you might be interested in.

Usually it’s a case of asking to be put on a list (DDs school called this a continuing interest list) and if a place becomes available, the school will call up all those on the list to sit a test, and the highest ranking (this could be score/distance and or admisisons criteria based) gets offered a place.

Most grammar schools have a relatively low turnover of students, so places come up rarely and there’s usually a lot of competition to get one. DDs school had about 20 girls sit each time a place came up.

Tbh it’s a long shot. If he really isn’t settled and it’s affecting his education it might be worth looking at other schools in the area that might be a better fit
