The journey should worry you. A 30-40 mile a day round trip is not ideal for a child, it will mean hours of his life spent travelling, and not just on school days but every after-school event and every weekend get-together. If you're using a private coach, he'll be restricted to travelling home on its timetable - no unplanned hanging out after school, after-school activities need transport to be organised. When he's older, he'll want to socialise with schoolfriends in the evening, potentially with nights out that don't finish until 11.00 in the evening or later - how will he get home then?

I have no idea what the alternatives are like in Chelmsford, but if you are genuinely unable to find a school you like in your town, you should consider moving house rather than expecting your child to do this commute.
