SEN and the 11 PLUS • Understanding WISC V cognitive assessment

Hi

I was not sure where to post. My son is in Year 10 now and has attended a grammar School since year 7. In primary school he was always one of the top and we had no behavioural issues. He was the first covid year and the transition to secondary was not great. Since he has been at grammar his behaviour has increasingly got worse and now he is failing in everything academically to the point that they are now recommending he drops GCSEs. This was always the right school for him - he passed easily, had little tutoring and he wanted to attend.

The school think he might have ASD and possibly ADHD. We are initially pursing the ADHD diagnosis as he is more open to this. As part of this, the psychologist will be conducting a WISC V cognitive assessment - would someone be able to explain why they might do this, how this will help in understanding my son's capabilities etc.
