A very large majority of pupils at the grammar schools come from state primary schools already. And you’d need to ban tutoring as well if you want only the most able and not the most ‘prepped’ - tutoring is far more effective than private education on exam outcome.
Is that true, a very large majority of pupils are from state primaries? From my limited experience - 1 child in 1 grammar school - I'm not sure it's a majority, never mind a very large one.

Of course there are lots of other factors that gain an advantage, including tutoring, and you can't level out all of them. But nothing will have as much impact as where the 30 hours schooling is spent each week.
I agree with you. I also have limited experience (one child at one grammar) but I was genuinely quite surprised by the numbers of private school kids.
